Socha-Gelbmann Electronic Discovery Survey to be Retooled

Following the release of the Sixth Annual Socha-Gelbmann Electronic Discovery Survey in August 2008, George Socha announced that the much publicized survey will be discontinued in its current form starting in 2009. The survey has provided a set of rankings for electronic discovery providers and applications since 2003 and grew in sophistication and interest each year of its publication. Mr. Socha says that the original intent of the survey was to guide consumers entering an inchoate market; however, in recent years the market has matured and consumers have come to rely too heavily on the rankings. In addition, the rankings have influenced the stock prices of publically held compa- nies and the ability of some companies to obtain financing. Mr. Socha indicated that this was never the intention of the survey rankings and that even though the survey methods were as objective as possible, they should never have used as a substitute for consumers conducting their own assessments of providers and services. Starting in 2009, the survey will be retooled to more effectively assist consumers in matching their perceived e-discovery needs to what providers have to offer.
